According to Herman and Chomskys Propaganda Model (PM) [1], there are many factors that shape the distribution and influence of news media coverage. Two of the most important factors are the geographic reach of newspapers (national versus regional newspapers), the direct targeting of specific sectors of the population, and/or the political ideology of the media outlet itself. The PM states that each linguistic account of an event must pass through five filters that define what is newsworthy. One such filter, the advertising filter (the second in the PM), predicts that outlets will try to cater to a target demographics expectations, rather than being fair in their treatment of what is news.
