Mary Austin Now: Mary Austin was an American writer, feminist, and environmentalist who lived in the late 19th century. She is best known for her work on women’s rights and Native American issues as well as her close friendship with author/naturalist John Muir. Her most famous book, The Land of Little Rain (1903), has been praised for its vivid descriptions of nature and the desert Southwest.
