Dear your highness Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Merrick Garland,

Or Merri. Can I call you Merri?

I feel like you and I would get along well. Not only because were both Jewish nerds gifted with the ability to rock a pair of generic glasses. Nor solely due to my admiration of your name, which sounds like an off-brand craft supply product or the first draft naming attempt of a Harry Potter character.

No, I feel like you and I would get along well because Ive been in your same shitty positionof being led to believe youd score an incredible, esteemed, life-changing job, only to be passed over for someone else who is less qualified. (Earned the role under flawed or even corrupt circumstances, perhaps.)

Whenever Ive slowly come to realize that no, that sweet employer (who seemed sincerely enthused during my interview, thank you very much) wont be calling me backand when it became clear that no, that turtle-man of a Senate Majority Leader wouldnt set a confirmation hearing for you, my reaction has been, to put it eloquently:

AaAaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It sucks. (judge-y translation: I dissent)

Anyway, Merri, I want you and in turn, me to know these three things:

Youre not alone. Job rejection and the pain that accompanies it arent frequently discussed in our society. People dont typically announce such news on social media nor declare it to their friends. We dont tend to share anything we deem shameful. But we could. Because job rejection is actually not shameful; its a natural part of most anyones career journey. Its not your fault. This is solely a reflection of the employer (or, um the Grand Oppressive Party) and its needs, behaviors, and ideals. You didnt do anything objectively wrong. You still have value. And talent. And general kickassary. Lots of it. In other words, Its not about your merit, Merrick.Maybe theres still hope for you. #VoteThisNovember

OK, bye for now, Merri. I hope you have a meaningful Yom Kippur.

P.S. Im not sure if you know Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but if you do, please tell her to keep working out and taking her daily multivitamins.
