The same NPR who, according to one of its own news producers, in the runup to the Iraq War, was sensitive to the accusations that we were the Bush-bashing network, so we bent over backwards to avoid feeding that charge. Hence, a new report, pre-war, as gullible as that of the Post and the Times. After that incident, they began asking whether there is room for such a thing in a constitutional republic. NPR journalists want to do the right thing.
Partly this reluctance is because journalists misapprehend their duty. Every political show whether it be meet the press or something on CNN or MSNBC will cover a political issue, say unemployment, and then they will shield themselves from criticism by having two guests on to discuss: one democrat and one republican. In the US, law enforcement has warned people to be mindful while playing the game, with The Wall Street Journal having produced an article that included mention of players sharing images and tales on social media of dangerous encounters, such as Pokemon appearing on or near subway tracks and in one instance, of armed robbers in wait at certain places to fleece arriving players. In many cases Party members hold Party positions that have no corresponding state position but nonetheless exercise tremendous power over affairs of state. So instead they adopted a whole-of-society approach to the War on Disinformation and set up a thick network connecting technology and media companies, universities, and NGOs, such as the Stanford Internet Observatory, the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, and the Harvard Kennedy Schools Shorenstein Center on Media Politics and Public Policy. Sixty years ago we needed reporters to tell us what was happening. Indeed, the closer your guys position is to Klan positions, the harder you make it for View From Nowhere MSM reporters to report the truth. Therefore the most critical prerequisite for an individual to hold a position of power in this system is that they absolutely must be a Party member in good standing. But this ignores the signal fact of American politics since 2016: Donald Trump was elected to the nations highest office, but was not a Party member in good standing. Thanks for giving a cogent analysis of what I think has been a long standing problem for NPR. Instant, conclusive analysis in a three-minute report on the safety of clinics in Kansas that perform abortions is almost humanly impossible without being glib, sarcastic, cynical, biased, or all the above. My own view is that a journalist should be explicit about a story taking the he-said-she-said format, and should commit in that story to following up with a more thorough analysis.
We can weigh how NPRs and Kathy Lohrs he-said-she-said reporting compares to what can be mechanically produced by a cleverly programmed computer. One of them is usually quite wrong and a good journalist makes the call The equivocating by the media (which continues to present day) to not call waterboarding and enhanced interrogation techniques torture - which they are by all international legal standards- is Exhibit A. I wonder if anyone has a transcript ready of any recent interview with Cheney about his book where he is asked directly if he still defends torture? One of the ways NPR can serve readers is to use the web to supplement the broadcast and not just post the transcript. First let me clarify one point. I take it back to the first Iraq War when Bush I and the Pentagon would announce something patently false and NPR would not investigate. As they strive to carry out this mission, on its airways one can see, or hear, a vast array of colorful characters: dyspeptic misanthropes telling us what they don't like about normal Americans; disgruntled victims; peevish purveyors of assorted reforms, and every other species of hectoring crank that can possibly be found fighting in the trenches of the culture war. On the one hand, supporters of the Ukraine war warn that Russia is about to reconstitute the Soviet empire in Europe, while at the same time the same people tell us Russia is out of missiles and on its last leg. Here it is: Can anyone imagine state governments allowing clinics to operate under regulations far weaker than those guiding ordinary health facilities if one of the primary functions of these clinics was to perform such a dangerous procedure on men? Instead, the scenario in the modern 24 hour newsroom is: crazy deadline; few staff, many juniors; press release; phone quote, email, twitter; quick edit; bish-bosh-bash, news bulletin assembled; web site amended; out it goes.
What to do if you have Covid: Can you go to work or school? There needs to be information, and LOTS of it, thanks to capacity and demand, but none of that information can afford to be complicated for fear that it will be ignored. Theres plenty of small things that it messes up, too. It was a very good discussion, as these things go. Terry Heaton in the comments with a different critique of he said, she said reporting. An Australian journalist comments on the he said, she said genre. You did a wonderful job of summing up my decade long complaints about NPRs reporting and the past two Ombudsmen their defense of the NPR SOP of both He said, she said and Some say reporting. Which is why I wrote: He said, she said does not serve listeners. Taxpayers were told that public broadcasting was needed in order to provide quality programming that would serve an "unserved or underserved" market. Daco from EY told AFP. I called in immediately, and told the screener that they should either correct the misinformation on the air if that was how they were going begin the program, or they should let me go on and make a point about how tea-people are delusional and believe things that arent real, and as proof I could point to the lead-in to the program. They say things like: It would be inappropriate to take a position on an issue Im covering, which is a non-sequitur. This is the Party of managerial technocracy, and every member - regardless of whether they occupy a formal government position or not - possesses a shared interest in seeing the further expansion of managerial control, of democratic power being progressively elevated out of the hands of the unwashed public and redistributed to a technocratic expert class (themselves). Properly operated radio transmitters don't interfere with adjacent channels, and tests of LPFM transmitters bear this out.
Schumacher-Matos and Lohr have demonstrated-as many other journalists and media-company officials have done again and again-that either they fail to understand what you are saying or they are wilfully misrepresenting your critique, quite possibly because they believe that doing so provides them political cover. Todays journalists simply dont know how to present an argument and instead allow those with skin in the game to do it for them. In other words, its a kind of outsourcing. And when challenged on it, NPR journalists do not say: sorry, we didnt have time to figure out whos right. While I have called for updating some of the details in the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, I love the direct, elegant wording of its first principle: Seek Truth and Report It. We must always remember that PR is the flip side of the coin of professional journalism. It may be the flip side, but its PART OF THE SAME COIN! After the war, the region became part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, beginning a long relationship with the U.S. It makes me trust you less. The audience needs to trust that the journalist has examined both claims equally. This is an abuse of the public trust. The FCC abolished the doctrine in 1986. It took this step after it had conducted an extensive study in which it determined that there were so many broadcast outlets that the variety alone would assure that diverse points of view would be presented to the public. A top Maryland elections official was arrested and charged this week with felony and misdemeanor counts. That wont change til people at the top decide to spend the time & resources it takes to produce a better product. In this light, the people formerly known as the audience are free to expect more from the summaries. Whats that sound Im hearing?
In last weeks NPR report, the dispute was about the new requirements for abortion clinics in Kansas. It would be unfair for me to close without noting a broadcast which I heard last night. That isnt what journalism is about, it is/was about getting the truth back in the last century when I had far more respect for the profession. They fall back on he said, she said. Its understandable. The Post Office staged a campaign of threats and misinformation in a bid to halt or delay broadcast of the interview with Mr Roll, including smearing sub-postmasters and sending legal threats to Panorama's expert sources.
