It can be a hassle to have to empty your robot vacuum after every cleaning cycle especially when you are suffering from allergies. In addition, dirt and debris are thrown back into the air every time you empty the robot.
Self-emptying bases limit your exposure to dust by having the robot move debris from its bin into a bigger trash bin when it's full.
The Samsung Jet Bot+
Samsung's robot is the most advanced robot we've ever tested. It has excellent filtration as well as a fantastic navigation system and the ability to empty the dustbin without hands. It features HEPA filtering and can lock in dust particles that are airborne to prevent allergies. The rotating brush bar at the top of the device can reach into the tightest of spaces. It also comes with self-cleaning extractors which grind up hairs to prevent tangles.
The Jet Bot picked up a lot of debris on my carpets and hardwood floors when I tested it. It omitted a couple of small things in the corner of my dining room and required a second look at them, but it was very effective overall. Compared to the Roomba it took the other one in my tests as its side brush was more effective on edges and was more effective in terms of removing smaller pieces of debris.
The Samsung Jet Bot is controlled through the SmartThings app and can be configured to automatically clean at times that are convenient for you. It can also be scheduled to clean specific areas or rooms as well as establishing virtual no-go zones (and physical ones if you prefer).
It utilizes LiDAR sensors akin to the ones used by self-driving vehicles to map and navigate and a camera at the front for intelligent object recognition. This is a feature that helps it avoid collisions with furniture or other objects and to find the most efficient route between rooms. It can also detect objects it believes to be "poop" and make an educated guess.
The SmartThings App lets you schedule cleaning times and monitor the robot's status. You can also monitor the events happening on the map. The app can be set to alert you when the robot's bin becomes full. It will return to its dock to empty itself before continuing the cleaning process. The 0.3L dustbin is easy to empty and can be cleaned, since it's enclosed to keep it hygienic.
The iRobot Roomba 960
The Roomba 980 is iRobot's top of the top-of-the-line robot, and is also the most expensive. It's also a fantastic performer that is in the same category as the top self-emptying robotic vacuums in terms of cleaning power due to its HEPA filter and powerful battery. It also has a cool little feature known as CarpetBoost which automatically boosts the power of the vacuum when it senses that it's on carpet.
As with previous Roomba models, this's frame is circular and it has a single, clear window at the top that carries the camera. It's that camera that gives this model some real intelligence. It makes use of the camera in order to perform VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) by analyzing distinctive features in a room and then remembering them. It then compares this information with the relative positioning gyro IMU and wheel odometry data to build an image of the space it's in.
It's an extremely clever system, and it actually does a great job - even on carpets, which is where the Roomba generally has a longer time than hard surfaces. There are a few other amazing smart functions on the 980 too, like the ability to set up an annual cleaning schedule and play a tune that will aid in finding your robot. The front has a large "Clean", which will turn on your robot. There are indicators that indicate when it is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, as well as when the bin is full.
If you're looking to clean up a small mess, the 980 also has the ability to clean up spots that are fairly basic, though it doesn't cover as much ground as the most sophisticated alternatives available. If you have some wires that pose dangerous to your robot, you can use the virtual wall feature to create a wall that will tell it to stay clear of them.
The app that comes with the 980 is simple to use and provides you a visual overview of what your robot is doing. You can also build schedules and play with other settings, such as bin capacity and reduced power mode.
The iRobot Roomba 960
iRobot is a brand that is synonymous with robot vacuums. The Roomba 960, priced at $700, is somewhere between the two. It's a little cheaper than the top-of-the-line 980, yet it has many of the same features. These include a camera to navigate and a smartphone application with detailed cleaning maps. It also has Virtual Wall which creates a barrier that the Roomba won't cross.

The 960 performed well, particularly on floors that were not bare. It sucked up lots of cat litter, food crumbs and dirt that was tracked in. It is also adept in climbing over obstacles like stair runners and the legs of tables and chairs. It was able to suck up pet hair, as well, though it had to contend with smaller particles like baking soda.
The 960 is different from other Roomba models in that it has a separate trash bin to collect large debris. This eliminates the need for maintenance. You can empty the bin by pressing a button using the iRobot Home app, or by using voice commands from Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
The iRobot HOME App lets you customize every cleaning cycle. You can set the number of passes and select from a variety of options like edge clean, or a full room sweep. It will also send an alert when it's time to empty the dirt container.
The 960 is simple to operate, with buttons on the top and controls within the iRobot HOME app or through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is also simple to maintain thanks to an indicator that shows battery life on the top and a docking system that automatically transfers debris out of the dirt compartment to the bin when it's time to empty the. The iRobot HOME App also provides you with videos on how-to and provide the location of each object it has collected. The battery time of the 960 isn't great however it's enough to let you use it throughout the day without having to worry about charging it prior to bedtime. The iRobot HOME app is available on both iOS and Android devices.

If you're looking for a robotic vacuum that automatically empty its own bin and is compatible with Google Home or Amazon Alexa, the Roomba 970 is worth checking out. It uses the same advanced navigation system as other new iRobot models and is able to detect stairs, which is something that could be a pain with some other vacuums. It also has a central camera to scan the floor as it moves around and can recognize furniture, walls, and other obstacles, so that it doesn't run into objects. It can also set limits for the robot by using the virtual wall tool.
This model is different from older models because it uses lithium-ion batteries instead of nickel metal hydroide. It's now running longer between charges and has greater endurance in cleaning sessions. It's not quite as fast as the Shark AI Robot, but it's still fairly quick and can navigate a room with ease.
The 970, like other models in the 960 series, is controlled via the iRobot App and connects to the Wi-Fi network with any setup needed. It has a small handle on its front of the device that you can use to return it manually to its charger, and a spot-cleaning button lets you focus on a specific part of your home. The 960 robots utilize the same three-stage procedure as the other current iRobot models, which combine the power-lifting and agitation to thoroughly clean the floor and remove dirt.
The 960 is a great choice for carpets that are clean and can pick up a large amount of hair, dust, and other debris, thanks to its brushrolls and powerful suction. However, it has a difficult time with carpets with high piles and tends to leave a bit of sand in its tunnel. It has a decently-sized dirt compartment and will let you know when it's full, either via the app or a light on the top of the robot. It can be programmed to clean on a schedule, and we found it to be easy to set this up during our tests.
