The iRobot J7+ was an excellent obstacle avoidance robot however, it didn't always do a great job in avoiding crumbs or dirt on my rugs. It also was known to over-vacuum specific areas, resulting in a lot of dust in the filters, and an unclean home.
Smart Mapping
Some of the top robot vacuums have an app that allows you to alter cleaning modes, create schedules, and see a map of the area covered by the machine. This is an excellent feature that a few competitors do not have. This allows you to create profiles that will automatically start your robot at certain times and continue to run on regularly, for example, cleaning the living room before dinner or every other day.
A good app will also allow you to control your robot with voice commands. Some models are compatible with Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant and can work completely hands-free. You can say "start with a clean" or "change cleaning mode" without having to use the app.
To enjoy a hands-free and effortless experience, choose a model with a large dust bin that can hold many cleaning sessions before needing to be empty. There are models that are self-emptying that take some of the burden of emptying the machine after each run of vacuuming.
If you're looking for a robot that does more than vacuum, think about one that has a mopping function. These are typically larger than the robotic vacuums and come with a water tank in the interior that holds multiple cleaning sessions worth of dirt and debris prior to needing to be cleaned.
Robots that are more sophisticated can develop their own maps and remember the plan of your house from one cleaning session to the next, which prevents them from getting lost or stuck. This can make a significant difference in the effectiveness of your robot vacuum, as it will not have to return to where it started when it encounters walls or furniture.
Our test subjects who tested robots with this feature found it to be very efficient. They could easily sit back and watch TV or perform other chores while the robot cleaned.
