Lost Keys
All keys should be kept safe at all the time. No one can have more than one at a given time (except for broken keys in locks). Completed reports on stolen or lost keys must be filed with University Safety. more information is required if the theft was determined to be the result of criminal activity. The cost of replacement for a lost/stolen lock key is $30 per key. The fee must be paid to the responsible owner of the key.

Broken Keys
After a few years of using, it's not uncommon for keys to break. If your key breaks in the lock, you'll need to get a new one. But if the remainder of the key is still in good shape it could be possible to repair it.
A paperclip is a great way to hold the broken piece from both sides and push it out. If the broken piece isn't trapped too far in the lock, you can try using a pair pliers. If it's broken close to the lock, you might require a device called"key extractor" or "key extractor" that has the form of a bar that has barbs on it that are similar to a screw. The bar is inserted into the locking mechanism and then twisted to push the barb into it. This will allow you to remove the key.
If you have the proper tools, it's not difficult to replace the key on a keyboard. You'll require the key cap (the part of plastic that covers the switch) Keypad, key cap and key retainer clip. The key cap is comprised of either metal or plastic posts which are inserted into slots on the switch. To replace a cap, carefully remove all the internal parts and mark their places so that you can return them later. You may need to wash the keyboard first with the help of rubbing alcohol.
Fobs Not Working
It might seem absurd to think that your key fob may require regular maintenance but it's not unusual to see them stop working at some moment. Sometimes, the problem can be as simple as an inoperative battery. If you have changed your batteries, but your device is still not functioning, it's time to consider a different approach.
The buttons also wear out, which is another common reason why a fob ceases working. When you press the button on your fob the contacts send coded signals to the receiver in your car which communicates what action you want the key perform. If the contacts on your key fob are worn out and you are not able to press the button, or it may send a different signal than the one you wanted.
You can solve this issue quickly by using a physical car key to open your doors or start your engine. You can reset the fob by following the instructions in the owner's handbook of your car (check online for specific instructions).
If replacing the batteries and programming your key fob doesn't work you, you may need to have it replaced or repaired. Modern keys need to be programmed to be compatible with your vehicle's specific Vehicle Identification Number, and certain errors or wear and tear can cause this programming to be corrupted.
Transponder Chips
The transponder chip inside your car keys is a very important part of the key. They transmit an indication with a distinct frequency when the key is inserted in the ignition, the device in the car then recognizes the number and is sure it's you. The engine won't start when the device inside the car doesn't recognize the signal. This is intended as security measure to prevent thieves from hot wiring vehicles and driving them away.
The chip is not powered by a battery, therefore it does not require replacement or charging. It will however need to be programmed to the car by a person who has access to the car's ECU This is why it's crucial to bring your keys to a locksmith.
There are several types of transponder chips on the market, the most popular being Rolling Code and Crypto. Key blanks come with an aluminum head with slots that hold the glass ampoule/transponder, it is then inserted into a carrier (or sleeves) on the outside of the key bow (plastic head). The photo below is of one of these sleeve carriers from the back of a Ford key here. By using a PVC pipe cutter, or another method, you can remove the sleeve of a damaged Ford key.
A transponder-type key is more expensive than a regular metal key because of the chip however, it is cheaper than a fob or smart key. The cost of these keys depends on the make and model of your vehicle.
