In Diablo 2 you would hire followers to fight Hell's gates alongside you, however when they died, you had to rehire them with cold hard cash. A new follower was introduced in every zone, which means some D2R Items were far superior than other followers.
This changed in Diablo 3, where instead of employing mercenaries you gained three different companions during the story's campaign. You had the Scoundrel, Sorceress and Templar which represented different aspects of DPS tank, ranged DPS, as well as magic user respectively. In my Diablo 2 Resurrected adventure I only encountered helpful NPCs who stuck around for a few days then rode of into the sunset. When I asked Jackson how the game's follower function would work in the game, they said "for the first versions of the game, we do have a few places within the story that you'll encounter certain named NPCs that will be following you and helping in figuring out the what Lilith is up to around the globe.

With a smile, they continue "stay and watch, we could have something in the future to share, but there are no promises." It's a lot of sus.If any version of the follower system does make an appearance in Diablo 2 Resurrected, I'd rather it was the Diablo 2 style hired gun instead of all-encompassing followers. I was impressed by the variety of different abilities followers brought to the table in Diablo 2 and would love to see it reimagined. It creates more possibilities for various styles, and awesome demon-slaying ability chains.
But for the time being you might want to know more about the Diablo 2 Resurrected classes as they're what we'll playing as mostly. In an interview with Game director Joe Shely, however, it was said that the roster might expand because there's nothing that's eternal in Sanctuary.
The developers who developed Diablo 2 Resurrected have stressed that buy D2R Items they don't want players "feel like they can pay to win" when the game releases in the coming year.
