The have undergone a ma sive roster overhaul since general manager Dave Gettleman took over in 2018. At the time, the Giants had the fewest remaining drafted players in the NFL (under former general manager Jerry Reese) of all 32 teams -- think about that for a minute, let it sink in, and then put into perspective the task the new regime was asked to take on. Progre s in the win column hasn't been quick for the new regime, but at the very least Kendall Graveman Jersey , Gettleman and his team have done an excellent job clearing salary cap space. Bloated contracts for aging veterans that weighed down the salary cap when he took over -- including , , and are now fully off the books. With fully off the books and almost completely off the books, only ma sive contract (among aging veterans) remains, and that will most likely come to an end next offseason. All of this is to say that the Giants are headed in a new direction.If second-year quarterback proves to be more like the quarterback who fell just short (despite mi sing multiple games) of the all-time rookie pa sing touchdown record, and le s like the quarterback who broke the record for fumbles, the Giants will have salary cap flexibility to build around him in the coming years. Jones' rookie contract runs another four years (including 2020).On every championship roster, you'll find a number of salary cap bargains. Typically, these players are on their rookie contracts. Sometimes, they are signed in free agency to one-year prove-it contracts. So today we're going to dive a bit deeper into the Giants' roster to pinpoint the five players who present the biggest "value" for the franchise from a salary cap standpoint. It didn't take long for Slayton to prove he can ball at the NFL level. Despite mi sing valuable training camp and preseason reps to build rapport with Jones, in addition to the first two weeks of the season, Slayton debuted with three receptions for 82 yards on just five targets. His rapport with Jones was obvious, and he also tallied a ma sive performance against the with Eli Manning as his quarterback. Slayton has the speed (4.39 40-yard dash) and leaping ability to consistently win in contested-catch situations in man coverage. As the NFL continues to move toward more man-coverage heavy defensive play-calling, and as the Giants move to a vertically-oriented offense under first-year coordinator Jason Garrett, a receiver like Slayton who can win on contested-catch situations is vital. There is reason to believe the Giants landed Jones' No. 1 receiver with a fifth-round pick and Reggie Jackson Jersey he will be on the books, against the cap, for under $1 million for another three seasons (including 2020).2020 salary cap hit: $1.45 millionThe 2019 season was a breakout campaign for Tomlinson if you ask anyone who has had acce s to and studied the all-22 tape. Of course, a breakout will never show up in the stat sheet for an interior lineman like Tomlinson. However, Tomlinson's ability to push the pocket in the pa sing game, added to his already borderline elite ability to control and stop the run game, made him arguably the Giants' most valuable defensive player in 2019.Pro Football Focus named Tomlinson the Giants' most valuable defensive player in his third consecutive season grading above 78 overall. There is debate around NFL circles around the importance of building a strong run defense, but if you don't have interior linemen like Tomlinson to control the point of attack, it won't matter what kind of talent your defense has at the second or third levels. Tomlinson still has room to grow, but as of now, he is one of the biggest values on the entire roster. 2020 salary cap hit: $5.92 millionJones' $5.92 million cap hit isn't chump change, but when compared to the standard at the quarterback position, it has the potential to be one of the biggest bargains in the NFL. Heading into the season, 25 quarterbacks have a bigger 2020 salary cap number than Jones. Out of those 25 quarterbacks, 15 of them have a 2020 cap hit of $21 million or more. Now is the time for the Giants to use these cap savings to build around Jones -- next offseason and the offseason after that -- as his rookie contract takes its first big salary cap jump in 2023. If Jones can hone in those traits and minimize the bad ones, he will ultimately move up to No. 1 on this list. In that scenario, the Giants will become contenders again a lot sooner than currently anticipated.2020 salary cap hit: $2.03 millionAfter debuting as the Giants' starting left guard while starting in all 16 games as a rookie, Hernandez went on to play another full season in 2019. It was a tale of Terry Steinbach Jersey two seasons though for the talented offensive guard. In 2018, he graded out as one of PFF's 20 best guards in all of football. In 2019, it was almost the opposite. Hernandez's decline coincided with Nate Solder's ma sive regre sion (to his left side) and the struggles of centers and (to his right side). Of course, Hernandez needs to shoulder some blame, but after reviewing his 2019 tape, he looked a lot like the player we saw in 2018 -- always looking for extra work, excellent when pulling in the run game (something Pat Shurmur did not call for enough of), and strong at the point of attack. In 2020, Hernandez could benefit the most from the coaching changes on offense. Replacing Hal Hunter (who was out of football until close friend Pat Shurmur brought him back) as offensive line coach with former offensive line coach Marc Colombo was an excellent start. Perhaps more importantly, the Giants are expected to move away from their zone-heavy blocking scheme to incorporate more power and gap blocking concepts under Garrett. This will be similar to the system Hernandez thrived in at UTEP, and it fits his skill set much better. A Khris Davis Jersey bounceback season for Hernandez will keep him on this list for 2021 and he'll likely bump up a few spots.2020 salary cap hit: $1.86 millionInjuries derailed what looked to be a promising debut season for Peppers in blue, but when he was on the field, he had a much greater impact than what you see on the stat sheet. Peppers' ability to serve as the alley defender is vital for any defense that plays as much nickel as the Giants (and now most teams) did and will do moving forward. He was often asked to be the last line of defense and he did well in that role. Peppers also made some splash plays that changed games -- including a pick-six off of 2019 rookie quarterback .Moving forward, with 2020 second-round pick slated to provide a ma sive upgrade next to Peppers over , the former 2017 first-round pick could be in line for a breakout season.
