The best way to keep your home tidy is with a robot vacuum. It will pick up dust, pet hair, and other debris on surfaces.
Some robots connect to smart assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant for a hands-free experience. Look for models that recharge and resume cleaning where they left off.
1. iRobot s8
This smart robot vacuum and mop is an excellent choice for many homes. It has a great navigation system with GPS and laser sensors. It also has many features and control options that can be accessed through the app. It comes with a useful feature which allows you to create cleaning zones in areas that require extra attention, and Keep Out zones in areas where you don't want it to be. It also gets software updates, just like all Roomba products, that improve the quality of the product over time.
It's expensive but it's also one of the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has evaluated. It's got a huge battery that can sweep all of your home in less than two hours. It also switches between mopping and vacuuming at the push of one button. And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the bin after each run, this one automatically emptys into the larger waste container that is above its charging dock.
It has a wide range of other features that make it a good choice for homes of all sizes that include intelligent obstacle avoidance, which uses both a camera and processor-powered smarts to detect obstacles. It's not often tripped or stuck during a cleaning process. In my tests it was the most effective at avoiding objects such as power cables. It's not as reliable at detecting pet waste or other hazards.
2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8
While the Anker-owned Eufy has earned its name in the field of low-cost robot vacuums, it hasn't previously offered an all-in-one model that could also mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that comes with a variety of features that are advanced and is able to compete with more expensive models.
Laser navigation is the primary selling point of this machine. The previous Eufy devices have built up an approximate map of your home by using infrared sensors and bumping into objects, but the X8's laser mapping system is much more accurate. It takes less time to create an accurate map of your home and can store multiple maps. This is perfect for homes with multiple floors.
The X8 is still a decent vacuum for floors that are not clean that can carry debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with ease. The X8's tyres, despite their circular shape, are efficient at grabbing corners and edges. It's not the best cat litter eater, however, with our tests showing it only removes about 90% of the fur from hard floors.
The mopping mode that is the basic one uses the same reservoir of water as the vacuuming mode. While this is a good option for spills that aren't too big but you cannot regulate the amount of water it uses which can limit its effectiveness for more severe stains. It is effective in removing hair from pets. It has a higher percentage of hair removal than the Roborock S7.
3. Miele RX2
Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is known for its quiet, powerful appliances. It is a stunning design, superb navigation and a powerful cleaning power. There are a few niggles in its operation that prevent it from being ranked as the top smart robot vacuum.
The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping technology that uses a LIDAR to map a room, and a pair 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoiding obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once the room is mapped the app allows you to designate virtual no-go zones and preferred areas that the robot will clean automatically. You can also alter the cleaning options, begin cleaning manually, or view a live feed of the cameras onboard from the main screen.
The RX2's sensors work well by registering furniture and obstructions in real-time. The suction and sweeping abilities are excellent, taking away surface debris from carpets with medium pile and also removing dust that has been deposited on floors. It's not the fastest robotics available. It's not the greatest climber and has issues with metal threshold transition strips.
Some people buy robot vacuums because of the ease of setting up a schedule in an app, only to forget about them for weeks. But it's important that a robot is able to do the job and that's why our ZDNet staff tested and reviewed several of the most popular models to help you select the best one for your home.
4. Shark ION
This budget robovac is a robot that looks like any other, but it has some extra features and is more efficient. Its smart mapping system creates 2D and 3-D maps of your home and makes use of them to navigate and avoid obstacles. It can even identify common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors along with a bump detector and an infrared sensor to keep the vacuum from stepping on steps makes it one our most agile vacuums.
It was able to climb over the thick shag carpets and was not stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690-). Its navigation abilities were impressive as well; its composite score in carpet and bare floors was better than the competition. It picked up 98.5 percent of surface litter and embedded pet hair from our lab test samples.

Eufy 11S is a good option if you're looking for a robot vacuum that's simple and has no frills at a low cost. It isn't equipped with some of the advanced features, such as digital mapping and Alexa integration, found in higher-end models but if you're not looking for these features, you can save cost with this model.
This robot is easy to set up and use. It does not require smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However it does include an remote control that lets you select between various modes and adjust the suction level. You can also manually assign the robotvac to the schedule of cleaning.
During our tests during our tests, the 11S was very effective at removing dirt and pet hair from hard floors and in low-pile carpets. Its slim profile helped it reach under furniture and other objects that more bulkier robots couldn't reach. It was also able to traverse door thresholds and move from one type of floor to another.
Like other robots, the 11S is able to suck up some objects like cords, drawstrings on hoodies, and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests that you can stop this by keeping these objects off the floor and using an organizer for cords if you can. It also recommends that you clean the dustbin, change the filters, and change or wash the brushes as necessary.
iRobot Roomba 990
The Roomba 980 is iRobot's flagship robot vacuum. It's costly but it's an excellent performer and is arguably the most sophisticated robot vacuum available. Its self-navigation feature and environmental mapping is something to behold. It is more sophisticated in its automation than most of its rivals, for instance the ability to set up virtual boundary markers with its mobile application. It's a capable robot vacuum, even though its application is a bit slow and the 980 spins when it is pushed over cables.
One thing we love about the 980 is the fact that it utilizes its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors as well as visual simultaneous localisation and mapping technology (or vSLAM) to store the floor plan of your home. It then uses this information to design a consistent and efficient cleaning path for every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient vacuum than most high-end robots.
Other features of the 980 include dual multi-surface brushes which grab dirt on hard floors and carpets, as well as an ejector brush that spins to sweep debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. Its floor tracking sensors aid it navigate across furniture and along edges, while Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling down stairs. It will automatically return to its base station for easy charging between sessions. Although the 980's battery lifespan and bin size aren't quite as good as those of other robot vacuums, it's a solid and reliable machine that can keep your floors clean for hours at a time.
