Certain robotic vacuums such as the Eufy 11S and my former top choice, the Roborock S8, have obstacle avoidance technology that stops them from derailing by running into furniture or tangling cords. Some robot vacuums, such as the iRobot Roomba j7+ have more advanced AI obstacle-avoidance technology which uses cameras, processors and smarts to avoid items such as lamp cords and pet waste. It is a little bit more expensive than the other bots I've tried, but it does a great job of avoiding obstacles, and never is stuck or tripped when working on my floor.
While the iRobot's j7+ was a great obstacle avoidance bot but it wasn't always able to do an excellent job of removing dust and crumbs from my carpets. It also tended to over-vacuum certain areas, which led to an abundance of dust in the filter and a less clean house.
Smart Mapping
The best robot vacuums have an app that helps you set up cleaning modes and schedules, as well as view the floor area that the machine covers. This is an excellent feature, and one that a few competitors do not have. This allows you to create profiles that automatically start your robot at specified times and keep it running on an ongoing basis, such as cleaning your living room prior to dinner or on a regular basis.
A good app will also let you control your robot with voice commands. Some models support Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant and can work completely hands-free, so you can say "start a clean" or "change cleaning mode" without using the app.
Choose a model that has a large dustbin. This will allow you to do many cleaning sessions without needing empty it. There are models that self-empty, which takes some of the burden of emptying the robot after each vacuuming run.
