The 38-55 traces its heritage back to the Ballard target rifle chambering, and with smokeless powder loaded can be quite a lethal hunter in the hands of an experienced shooter. 327 federal magnum ammo extends out to about 150 yards or so, and is quite a bit more effective than the standard 200 grain factory.35 Remington load.

What makes the 38-55 unique among metallic cartridges is that for almost 125 years, from its introduction through the advent of modern smokeless ammunition, no case manufacturer bothered to correctly size the 38-55 cases and bores to work with conventional cast bullets. This was a glaring oversight since, as it is well known today, conventional paper-patched, grooved and lubricated, black powder bullets require a case diameter significantly smaller than the rifle bore diameter to deliver the best accuracy.

Moreover, 38-55 cases are short, with a relatively thick neck that is too small to properly fit the bullet. Consequently, the 38-55 was never a good choice for most hunters shooting conventional cast bullets.

However, a new generation of reloaders have discovered that the 38-55 can be pressed to the limit with modern, hot smokeless loads and will deliver excellent accuracy and hunting performance. The key is to use a modern reloading press and the correct dies, combined with a good quality bullet that is compatible with the cartridge's capacity and pressure.
